School Girls Football Team represent Somerset at the
English Schools FA.
|
The Girls from Ilchester Primary School have had unrivalled
success so far this season, winning through to the Somerset
Finals following a string of impressive victories in their matches
between local Somerset Schools. Their winning ways continued
at the next level up where the girls, aged between 8 and 11,
were selected to represent Somerset in the South and South West
English Schools Football Association Regional Finals held in
Keynsham earlier this month.
From the start of their first match the girls played well, winning
an early penalty in the very opening minutes of the match, and
settling well into a good pattern of play winning successive
games all by the same score of 2 - 0. Despite being up against
some very strong looking teams from across the region, including
Gloucester, Wiltshire Berkshire, Oxfordshire and the counties
to the South and West of us here in Somerset the results continued
to fall in their favour and they won the competition group stage
and then faced a determined Hampshire team in a thrilling play
off. This match had the crowd buzzing as these two teams had
met in one of the earlier group matches and the result had been
the only one to go against Ilchester's Somerset Team. However,
a resolute performance from the whole team saw a stunning goal
from Emily Haggo followed by a period of impressive defending
and goal keeping from Kirstie Bailes to push them through to
the Final.
The final was another impressive match, up against an Oxfordshire
team that had not conceded a goal for the entire competition
or in any of the preceding qualification stages, and their run
of super performance continued into the final as finally Ilchester
were beaten. To come second however was a creditable victory
for these young ladies, placing the team the at the top of this
level of football, and giving them encouraging them to continue
to play football into the next season. The team manager, Mr
Nick Arnold (Deputy Head Teacher) was delighted with the whole
team who gave their very best effort to get as far as they did
which makes them the second best team in almost 4,500 of Englands
Primary Schools.

Girls – Somerset County Champions 2009-10
Congratulations to our
girls who played out of their skins, so brilliantly well, on
Friday 4th December at Bridgwater College.
The weather was cold
and wet, the pitches were very muddy and hard work, but the
girls played with so much passion and determination. They
won the tournament not through luck, but so much hard work,
grit and enthusiasm.
Everyone at Ilchester
is extremely proud of you all – you each played your part in
becoming Somerset Champions!
Congratulations to…
- Kirstie – Superb goalkeeper
– very muddy at the end, played brilliantly and saved many
shots all day! A great boot too!
- Audrey – Solid in defense,
took the corners, played exceptionally well all day, a budding
defender with a great right boot!
- Megan – Another solid
and reliable defender, always fought hard and fairly to win
the ball. Gave everything!
- Jessica – A midfielder
who was so determined to work as hard as she could to help
the team. Excellent tackling and passing of the ball!
- Freya – A wonderful
potential! A year 4 girl who learnt so much in the tournament.
She played so well and tackled for everything. Great Effort!
- Ellie - A wonderful
effort in all matches. Ellie tackled so well and was never
afraid to tackle anyone! Scored an important goal in the Semi-finals!
- Sarah – Our team’s engine!
Won all tackles, passed and involved all team-mates at the
right time. Played superbly, scored all the other goals –
even when injured! A brilliant performance!
- Emily – A runner! Emily
ran and ran and ran, until she could run no more! Brilliant
effort in all games, worked tirelessly as striker and kept
tackling for the team! Excellent performance!
- Charlotte – A excellent
effort all day! Worked very hard and played for the team always.
Gave everything and made so much improvement as the competition
went on. Superb!
- To all our parents,
grandparents and friends who watched…I hope you are as proud
of your girls as can be. Thank you for all your positive support
and your arm around them when they needed it!
They did you proud and
I am so very proud of them too. They were outstanding…all of
them!
